Seaweed, cooking, and the sea

Seaweed has long been a consuming (in soups, salads, snacks, and elsewhere) interest of mine, and so I joined this community upon transplanting my LJ to Dreamwidth; since the comm's lain dormant for over eight years, here's some freshly harvested content from scans_daily.

The anthropomorphic alternate Japan of Usagi Yojimbo, Stan Sakai's comic about the adventures of a wandering samurai rabbit, has always been informed by a meticulous devotion to historical research, with the result that the details of the period's everyday life make Sakai's fantastic universe feel lived-in. As Usagi resolves a neighborly dispute and foils villains in a coastal farming village, the reader learns a good deal about the sea-to-sushi process of converting laver into nori sheets:
